“18 inches sits at the collarbone” — on whose neck?

Where a necklace falls depends on your neck, not on a chart. Measure once and see exactly where every standard length lands on you.

Measure around the base of your neck, where a chain would rest. A soft tape, or a paper strip against a ruler.

Typical adult: 13–14″ (33–36 cm)

Where each necklace length fallsA simplified torso with each standard necklace length marked at the height it would fall, based on the neck measurement entered.

Positions are calculated from your neck measurement. Torso proportions vary by several inches between adults, so treat the body outline as a guide and the drop figures as the real answer.

The bit nobody shows you

A necklace is sold by total chain length. What you actually care about is the drop — how far it hangs below your neck. Those are different numbers, and the difference between them is your own neck:

drop = (chain length − neck) ÷ 2

A 16-inch chain on a 13-inch neck drops 1.5 inches and reads as a choker. The same chain on a 15-inch neck drops half an inch and sits like a collar. Same necklace, different jewellery — which is why a length chart with no neck measurement in it can't answer the question you're actually asking.

How to use it

  1. 01

Measure around the base of your neck

Use a soft tape, or wrap a paper strip and measure it against a ruler. Sit it where a chain would naturally rest, at the base of the neck rather than high up under the jaw. Snug, not tight. Most adults measure 13 to 14 inches, but the whole point of this page is that yours might not.

  2. 02

    Read where each length falls

The diagram places every standard length using your measurement, not an average. The drop figure beside each one is how far the chain hangs below the base of your neck — that number is the reliable part, and it's exact arithmetic.

  3. 03

Order by length, allowing for the pendant

Necklaces are sold by total chain length, so order that number. If there's a pendant, it hangs below the chain — add its height to the drop when you're deciding.

The standard lengths

Trade names describe bands rather than exact figures, so a given length can sit at the edge of two names. The landmarks assume roughly average proportions — the tool above replaces them with arithmetic from your own measurement.

Necklace length questions

How do I know what necklace length to buy?
Measure the base of your neck, then work out the drop: subtract your neck measurement from the chain length and halve it. That's how far the chain hangs below your neck. A 16-inch chain on a 13-inch neck drops 1.5 inches and reads as a choker; the same chain on a 15-inch neck drops half an inch and reads as a collar. This is why length charts alone can't answer the question — they don't know your neck.
Where does an 18 inch necklace sit?
On an average adult neck of about 13.5 inches, an 18-inch chain drops roughly 2.25 inches below the base of the neck, which usually puts it on or just below the collarbone. On a 15-inch neck the same chain drops only 1.5 inches and sits noticeably higher. Eighteen inches is the most commonly sold length precisely because it lands in a flattering place for a wide range of necks — but not all of them.
What are the standard necklace lengths called?
Collar is 12 to 13 inches and sits tight around the neck. Choker is 14 to 16 inches, at the base of the neck. Princess is 17 to 19 inches, around the collarbone, and is the most common gift length. Matinee is 20 to 24 inches, falling between the collarbone and the bust. Opera is 28 to 36 inches, below the bust. Rope is anything longer, and is often doubled.
How do I measure my neck for a necklace?
Wrap a soft measuring tape around the base of your neck, where a chain would rest — not high under the jaw, and not down on the collarbone. Keep it snug but not compressed. If you don't have a soft tape, wrap a strip of paper, mark the overlap, and measure the strip flat against a ruler. Don't use string; it stretches, and a stretched loop reads large.
Should I add length for a pendant?
Yes. A necklace's stated length is the chain only. A pendant hangs below the point where the chain sits, so the total drop is the chain's drop plus the pendant's height. A 1.5-inch pendant on an 18-inch chain lands about where a 21-inch chain would. Sellers rarely mention this, and it's a common reason a pendant necklace arrives sitting lower than expected.
What length necklace is best for a man?
Men's chains are usually 18 to 24 inches, and men's necks are typically larger — 15 to 17 inches. That combination matters: an 18-inch chain on a 16-inch neck drops just one inch and sits tight at the base of the throat. For a chain that sits on the chest, most men need 22 to 24 inches. Measure rather than assume, because the neck difference is exactly what the standard charts ignore.
How accurate is this?
The drop calculation is exact arithmetic: half the difference between the chain length and your neck measurement. What it can't know is your torso. Where 3 inches of drop lands varies by several inches between adults of the same height, so the body diagram is a guide and the drop figure is the answer. Real chain also curves rather than hanging in two straight lines, which makes the true drop very slightly less than calculated — by much less than the variation between people.
