A printable ring sizer that checks its own scale.

The reason printed sizers go wrong is almost never the sizer — it’s the printer. “Fit to page” and “shrink to fit” quietly scale the sheet by a few percent, and every size on it becomes wrong by the same amount. This one starts with a square you measure, so you find out before you cut.

  1. Step 1

    Print at 100%

    In the print dialog, set Scale to 100% and turn off “Fit to page”.

  2. Step 2

    Check the square

    Measure the 50 mm square below with a ruler. If it isn’t 50 mm, fix the scale and print again.

  3. Step 3

    Cut and measure

    Cut out the strip, thread the pointed end through the slot, and wrap it around your finger.

1 · Check the print scale

Measure this square with a ruler. Both sides must be exactly 50 mm. If they aren’t, reprint at 100% — nothing below will be right otherwise.

2 · Cut out the wrap-around gauge

Cut along the outline, cut out the slot, then wrap the strip around the base of your finger and push the left-hand end back through the slot. Pull it snug and read the size that lines up with the left edge of the slot.

Marked in US sizes, covering 40–74 mm of finger circumference. Sizes increase towards the pointed end, because the reading is taken at the slot.

Lay a ring over the circles until one exactly matches the inside edge of the ring — the printed circle should just disappear behind the band.

Each circle is labelled US · UK · ISO. Diameters run from 14.9 mm to 22.2 mm.

Sizes derived from the US trade standard (0.8128 mm of inside diameter per size), ISO 8653 and the British Wheatsheaf letter scale. Verify the 50 mm square before relying on any measurement from this sheet.

If the square isn’t 50 mm

Your printer scaled the page. In the print dialog, look for Scale and set it to 100%, and set Page Sizing or Page Scaling to None or Actual size. Turn off “Fit to printable area”.

If your square measures, say, 48 mm instead of 50 mm, the sheet printed at 96% and every size on it reads about a size and a half small. Don’t try to correct for it mentally — reprint.
